We are a group of educators, with a variety of K-12 experiences.
We consist of teachers, reading specialists and administrators with an average of over 25 years in public urban and suburban educators.
We have a proven track record of success in the education of youth from low social economic areas with a high minority population including English Learners.
Through our experience, we saw first-hand the disparities in the achievement gap beginning in primary grades, and witnessed the gap growing as students matriculate through school, causing teachers to work tireless to increase student achievement.
We saw a heavy focus in primary grades on comprehension through read alouds and having text read to students by a computer generated voice (essentially a listening center), virtually illuminating independent reading.
The National Reading Panel identified five concepts of effective reading instruction:
Phonics
Fluency
Phonemic Awareness
Vocabulary and Comprehension
Although there are endless strategies in teaching the five concepts, fluency is the most time consuming and difficult concept to monitor.
True effectiveness in fluency allows for regular practice in a 1:1 setting, providing immediate and direct feedback to the reader.
Time may be allocated for fluency school-wide or perhaps in classes through Drop Everything and Read, or Sustained Silent Reading, however even distinguished teachers cannot measure the integrity of the time spent by the students as it relates to fluency.
